1999 mazda 626 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Accord and camry are excellent choices, but they're not the most exciting cars in the world. There are plenty of other great options on the market these days, some of which are just as roomy, just as reliable, but far more fun to look at and drive. Mazda's 626 is a perennial also-ran that just never seems to get the amount of attention it deserves. The 1999 model should certainly find its way onto more shopping lists.  the fifth-generation mazda 626 presents a crisp and formal appearance that's far more refined than the previous generation. That's all the more true among japanese brands. The toyota camry is the automotive equivalent of plain vanilla.  we're pleased to see mazda buck that trend with a shape that's both elegant and sporty. The 626's subtle wedge shape bears a family resemblance to its upscale cousin, the mazda millenia. Overall, mazda has wisely chosen to tone down the use of chrome.  there are several reasons why the camry and accord dominate the market. A reputation for reliability is one. Low levels of noise, vibration and harshness is another. The 626's greater torsional rigidity helps take some of the slam and bang out of the potholes that are part of the landscape in michigan where i drove this car. The other two models come with a 2. 5-liter v6 rated at 170 horsepower.  all come standard with a 5-speed manual transmission -- except the es, which comes standard with a 4-speed automatic. Safety and security features added dual airbags, remote keyless entry and an anti-theft engine immobilizer to the list. interiormazda designed the 626 for optimum interior space efficiency. The space devoted to mechanicals was minimized, while the room offered to passengers and cargo was maximized. Still, the 626 isn't quite as roomy as the camry. The rear seat could use a tad more knee room, though there's plenty of shoulder space front and back.  there's plenty of in-cabin storage allowing motorists to stash everything from cassette tapes to handheld cellular phones. There's also a roomy back seat. It feels more comfortable than the back seats in most of the other cars in this class.  the trunk is spacious and can take up to 14. 2 cubic feet of cargo. More important than a number, it is shaped well, a rectangular shape without obstructions. The rear seats fold down for additional cargo capacity or to carry longer items.  the front seats in the 626 are excellent. The buckets not only provide long-distance driving comfort but superb lateral support. The rear seats are a little less satisfactory. We'd expect to be a bit stiff after a long trip, especially if we were stuck in the middle seat.  overall, the interior design emphasizes quality, comfort and ergonomics. Controls and switches more located comfortably within reach. Switches and knobs have a refined feel that bespeaks luxury. driving impressionthe camry and accord may sport toyota and honda badges, but the mazda 626 is a lot more fun to drive. This car has as personality. The driver can sense the road. Downshift into a lower gear and the v6 growls to life.  more is better when it comes to the drivetrain. Mazda's 2. 0-liter 4-cylinder engine features twin-cams and 16 valves. It produces 125 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 127 foot-pounds of torque at 3000 rpm. It comes with a smooth and gutsy 2. 5-liter v6 that produces 170 horsepower and 163 foot-pounds of torque.  those numbers may not sound like much compared to the new accord v6, which delivers a full 200 horsepower, but as we've wisely learned over the years, raw numbers can be misleading. Steering is variable rate power-assisted rack-and-pinion. In contrast to most other vehicles in this segment, mazda makes the stick a standard feature on all 626 models. It's got a lot of nice things going for it. It's handsome and roomy. It's more fun to drive than some of the other cars in this class. assembled inflat rock, michigan. options as testedabs with traction control. model tested626 es-v6. Power Mirrors✔ Sunroof/Moonroof

2007 mazda cx-7 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. We found it fun to drive, with responsive handling and good high-speed stability. Zoom-zoom-zoom.  crossovers, as they're called, have become the hottest segment in the auto industry. They combine the practicality of a truck-based sport utility vehicle with the agility, smoothness and fuel economy of a car. Just as important, they avoid the stigma that comes with a minivan or station wagon. The cx-7 competes with the toyota rav4 and honda cr-v, among others.  the cx-7 fits into mazda's zoom-zoom mold: sporty but functional; roomy but svelte; snappy but comfortable. A well-equipped, nicely featured, all-wheel-drive model goes for less than $30,000; and the top model with every option box checked comes in under $35,000. The transmission is a six-speed automatic with a sport shift feature. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is optional 1700).  the least expensive cx-7 is the sports model 23,750). Air conditioning and cloth upholstery are standard, as are cruise control and the usual complement of power windows, mirrors and locks. The cx-7 models come with three-point seatbelts (so be sure to use them) and adjustable head restraints at all outboard seating positions, and rear-seat child safety seat anchors (latch). So what if it doesn't necessarily fit the proportions of every vehicle to which it's applied. Which is much the case with the 2007 cx-7, especially the front end.  for starters, the fenders are seemingly transplanted directly to the cx-7 from the company's sports car, the rx-8. To fit those bulbous wheel housings to a sedan-like body required pinching the front end's nose and squeezing headlights into the tops of the fenders. This leaves substantial mass below the bumper line that's only slightly lightened by a massive mouth braced by large intake-like recesses that double as housings for the optional fog lamps. The way the cx-7's bulk is suspended between the exceptionally wide track (distance between the tires side to side) leaves it looking almost as if it's drooping, or sagging, from the weight.  the side view appeals more, with wheels pushed to the corners and a super-fast windshield sweeping back over tautly drawn side glass. Side mirrors separate the front door glass from an odd-looking, windwing-like, but fixed, tiny piece of glass at the base of the a-pillar. The beltline rises as it moves rearward, peaking just aft of the severely blistered rear wheelwell before tucking in between the steeply sloped backlight and the sculpted back end. Full-round, easy-to-grab door handles ride the crest of a soft bulge connecting the tops of the fenders. An understated crease highlights the lower door panels, skipping over the rear tires to continue around the bottom fold of the rear bumper.  the rear aspect is somewhat plain, with a modest spoiler sitting atop the backlight, itself resting in a gentle dip in the liftgate. A rather large, seamless bumper stretches the width of the back end, above a widespread pair of exhaust tips, this last a feature that's beginning to wear. It works on a vehicle boasting a robust powerplant under the hood, preferably a v8 or some other v-configuration, where each pipe nominally runs directly back from its bank of cylinders. But for draining burnt gases from an inline engine, especially an inline-4, and one sitting transversely, to boot, it's a bit overdone. A single pipe, or maybe two running tightly parallel and exiting out one side, seems more fitting. interiorthe interior makes no less of a statement than the exterior, and with much the same result. Some parts seem to work, others not so well. Importing styling elements and even components from other mazdas no doubt makes sense in terms of cost savings and even consistency of so-called dna but doesn't always yield the desired consistency or harmony in feel and look.  the dash is a prime example. Some parts look right, while others come across almost as a styling exercise in design 101, and not much of it looks of a piece with the rest. For starters there's what mazda calls the double-roof instrument panel. Translated, this constitutes, first, a ridge stretching across the top of the dash that's supposed to make the front seat passenger feel involved, included in the interior's dynamic. Below this floating lip is the second part, a more traditional dash construct comprising three elements, the instrument cluster, the center stack and the section holding the passenger airbag and housing the glove box. This lower part, the designers say, is intended to play to the driver, concentrating on the interfaces necessary for managing the car. All the pieces for this are there, so the job is doable, but the way everything is put together doesn't make it all that easy or appear that seamlessly integrated.  beyond the quirky design, the instrument cluster is deeply hooded, stylishly compartmentalized and softly lit to the point it's not a quick and easy scan. The steering wheel, borrowed directly from the sporty mx-5 miata with its much more confined cockpit, feels undersized in the more expansive interior of the cx-7.  large buttons and knobs populate the stack of air conditioning and sound system controls in the center, but their arrangement and assigned functions are far from intuitive. The optional navigation system only adds complexity, as it incorporates many of those functions into one of the menus accessed only through the touch-screen lcd and, for example, allows switching preset radio stations by exchanging the map display for the audio display. Where other car makers are trending toward simplicity and sleekness, the cx-7 has gone chunky and choppy. Overall, the cabin doesn't seem as friendly and as functional as its primary competition, the honda cr-v and the toyota rav4.  when it comes to accommodations, the cx-7 splits the difference between the. 2006 mazda tribute review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Among the sportiest of the compact suvs. introductionit's a well-worn cliche, but the mazda tribute puts some sport in sport utility. Responsive handling and brisk performance from the available v6 engine make the tribute one of the sportiest of the compact suvs.  the 2005 model line was recast to complement the rest of the mazda lineup, and little has changed with the 2006 model. The suspension had also been revised for improved handling. Available side-impact airbags and curtain airbags enhance safety.  the mazda tribute delivers an excellent value for drivers who want the versatility of a sport utility, but with the superior refinement and on-road handling of a car-based utility can offer. Seats are upholstered in cloth, the rear seat is a 60/40 split fold-down bench, and there's full carpeting and front and rear floor mats.  the s model adds fog lights, upgraded cloth trimmed seats, an upgraded driver's seat with adjustable lumbar, and sundry appearance items.  options for both i and s include a cassette player 200), an in-dash six-disc cd changer 500), a dvd entertainment system 1,200), various cargo area accessories, a perimeter alarm 115), side step tubes 400), color-keyed door edge guards 70), all-weather floor mats 40); compass and outside temperature gauge and auto-dimming rearview mirror 230 and $300 with homelink); moonroof deflector 50); rear bumper step plate 50); rear spoiler 300); and wheel locks 40). Some of these options are not available with certain packages.  a premium option package 1,610) for tribute i automatic features leather-trimmed seats, a six-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, fog lamps, overhead console with storage bins, illuminated vanity mirrors, maple-look wood-grain center stack and center console, painted bumpers, lower body-side and wheel-arch trim, and body-colored mirrors. The s is available with any one of three option packages: the first 1,480) adds six-way power driver's seat, seven-speaker premium audio with six-disc in-dash cd changer, power moonroof and retractable cargo cover and a single overhead storage bin; the second package 1,745) adds to the first leather-trimmed upholstery, the black-maple-look wood-grain center stack and console and leather-wrapped steering wheel; the third package 2,595) adds heated front seats and outside mirrors to the contents of the other two packages. The s is also available with a class ii trailer tow package 350) consisting of a frame-mounted trailer hitch with 3,500-pound capacity and wiring harness. A preferred equipment group 175) adds a cargo net, cargo tray, rear bumper step plate and wheel locks.  safety features that come standard include anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake force distribution (ebd) and brake assist. Side-impact airbags, designed to provide torso protection for driver and front-seat passenger, and curtain airbags 565), designed to offer head protection, are available only on the tribute s models. walkaroundthe mazda tribute has an aggressive look due to its forward-tilted stance, short overhangs and wide track. Thick bumpers, side cladding and wheel lip moldings, all tweaked and massaged for a slightly different look for 2005, carry over for the 2006 model and are smoothly integrated into the bodywork to give the tribute a sense of stability and refined ruggedness. Large multi-reflector headlamps with clear lenses and rear combination lamps with crystal lenses add a sporty dash.  in terms of external dimensions, the tribute sits near the middle of its class. Measuring 174 inches in overall length, the tribute isn't as long as the honda cr-v or the new 2006 toyota rav4 (at 181 inches). However, the tribute's wheelbase is only an inch shorter than the rav4's wheelbase (the distance the front and rear wheels). Also, the tribute has a relatively wide track (the distance between the left and right wheels), about the same as the rav4's. The cr-v is 6 inches narrower than the tribute. A longer wheelbase and wider track tends to offer better stability. interiorinside the mazda tribute is a pleasant place to be. The front bucket seats are comfortable and of higher quality than those found in many suvs. All five seating positions have three-point seatbelts and adjustable head restraints. Rear-seat passengers will discover that the tribute's rear windows do not roll down all the way, as with many small sport utilities.  the middle ground on exterior size means the tribute fares about the same inside. It trails virtually all the competition in headroom and hiproom and lands about in the middle in legroom. It feels roomier than it is, however, an indication of good packaging and design. The lower dash flows smoothly around the front-seat knee wells. Interior door panels are economically crafted to yield maximum elbowroom.  the 60/40 split-fold rear seat allows multiple combinations of people and stuff. Folding the rear seat reveals a flat cargo floor and nearly 67 cubic feet of cargo space. The glass does not have to be closed when opening the rear hatch.  up front, the switchgear is straightforward. Radio controls are easy to use, and the heating and air conditioning controls are simple. Cruise controls are mounted on the steering wheel. The instrument panel is straightforward and easy to read. The center panel is matte finish and trimmed in brushed aluminum.  visibility in all directions is very good. The shape of the tribute's hood combines with its seating position to allow the driver to clearly see both front corners of the vehicle, an advantage over the honda cr-v and many crossover utility vehicles. Narrow a-pillars (front) and d-pillars (rear) minimize blind spots. The low bottom edge of the rear window maximizes visibility, and there's no spare tire hanging off the liftgate to block the view. driving impressionthe mazda tribute is an agile and powerful little suv and it handles better than most sport-utilities. Its sharp steering allows the driver to guide it precisely. We found the tribute stable at high speeds. Handling response is relatively taut on winding roads, without that mushiness that characterizes suvs with big off-road tires and long-travel suspensions. Tribute handles much better than a jeep liberty, for example, and it's sportier and more fun to drive than a honda cr-v.  steering response is direct and accurate without a big dead spot in the center. There's enough feeling in the steering to give the driver a good sense of control. The tires provide respectable grip in paved corners and transient response in lane-change maneuvers is surprisingly good. In other words, it's relatively tight when turning back and forth on a winding road or in an accident-avoidance maneuver. The transmission shifts smoothly up and down, appropriately for the situation. A broad power band means the engine never lugs or strains. Mazda tuned the transmission for slightly more aggressive shifting and mapped it for quicker acceleration than in the ford escape. Properly equipped, the tribute can tow trailers up to 3500 pounds, which cover.
